GAME & MOVIE DESIGN – CONCEPT ART (LEVEL 2)
Game & Movie Design – Concept Art (Level 2)
(Prior knowledge is required: Concept Art Level 1)
Who is it for:
Anyone interested into developing advanced 2D digital drawing, character and environment design skills and build a professional portfolio for job applications in either the Game Design or the Movie production industry. Anyone interested into or coming from a related course field like Illustration, 3D Modeling, 3D Animation and more on an undergraduate Bachelor (BA Hons) Degree level. University students or graduates form similar Bachelor (BA Hons) or Master’s Degree courses who aim to level up their skills fast. Industry professionals seeking further knowledge.
Course Details:
The attendants of the Level 2 Game & Movie Design – Concept Art course will further develop their digital design skills acquired in Level 1 by learning professional tips and tricks to master their fundamental skills in fields such as Body Anatomy, Scale, Perspective, Scene Layout, Scene Mapping, Camera Angles, Color Theory, Composition, Lighting, Coloring, and more. Efficiency and efficacy are necessary skills required and sought after in a production level environment, therefore, during the first three months the course will focus on teaching advanced level techniques within image editing applications and aim for the students to build up speed to match the industry’s standard pace.
Throughout this concept art course, a number of pieces of artwork will be created and a selection of concept designs will be produced to a higher level of detail. The students will then learn to finalize their concept designs into high quality production standard stills called Matte Paintings that are used as set extensions mostly in the film industry. These Matte Paintings will be broken down into foreground, middle ground and background layer plates to be further edited within video compositing applications for camera animation purposes. A series of professional post-production workflow techniques will be demonstrated live through the workshops, to enhance the Matte Painting’s aesthetics by adding visual effects (VFX), and bringing it to life. Added to the above, the attendants will be required to record their process from the first stage of concept design until the final stage of Matte Painting. Lastly, a constructive video showing the whole design process will be produced to showcase the students’ work.
By the end of this Level 2 Game & Movie Design – Concept Art course, a professional portfolio will be built using a series of digital environments designed from many angles, along with complete character charts including poses, facial expressions, props and more. In addition, the students are expected to gain a solid understanding of the advanced techniques that are required to design complex ideas and also feel confident using image editing applications. The students will also acquire specific post-production knowledge using video compositing tools to showcase their production process between Concept Art and Matte Painting, and lastly create a camera animation with visual effects using their final Matte Painting.

3D Modeling – Character Design (Level 2)
(Suggested prior knowledge: 3D Modeling & Concept Art Level 1)
Who is it for:
Anyone interested into learning advanced 3D modeling techniques for character and prop design and building a professional portfolio for job applications in either the Game Design or the Movie production industry. Anyone interested into or coming from a related course field like Concept Art, Illustration, 3D Modeling for Architectural or Industrial Design, Game Design, 3D Animation, Visual Effects and more on an undergraduate Bachelor (BA Hons) Degree level. University students or graduates form similar Bachelor (BA Hons) or Master’s Degree courses who aim to level up their skills fast. Industry professionals seeking further knowledge.
Course Details:
This advanced 3D Modeling course is dedicated to teaching the students the complete production workflow used by professionals in studios for designing and creating 3D characters and props. From day one, the students will learn 3D modeling techniques within industry’s standard digital sculpting software. At the same time, a series of short exercises will train the attendants to brainstorm design ideas that can be applied to a variety of characters for cartoons, games and movies, whilst staying within a given theme.
The course aims to challenge the students’ ability to think fast, think smart, and think wide in order to be able to produce a vast variety of characters for any genre. This 3D modeling course will focus a lot on the details that make the difference between a simple character and a believable living and breathing character produced by AAA studios around the world.
A series of live demonstration workshops will teach the students how to develop anatomy skills as well as how to create rough 3D concept models for their character ideas, using a variety of approaches. Once approved, these 3D concept models will then be remodeled with high resolution details and retopologized to their optimized low-resolution version models, that are ideal and necessary for games and animated movies. The low-res models will be exported for UV unwrapping and using texture baking applications the students will generate texture maps like Normal map, Displacement, Ambient Occlusion, Thickness, Curvature, ID map and more.
Using the above baked maps the low-res characters will be fully textured using both procedural and hand painted professional methods and software. Lastly, the 3D models will be shaded with materials and rendered using photorealistic lighting setups and both GPU and CPU renderers. During the rendering stage, all the appropriate render passes (AOVs) such as ambient occlusion, shadows, reflectivity, specular highlight, diffusion, depth, and more will be exported for compositing purposes using post production techniques to enhance the final render image.
Skills Acquired in the Course:
- Research
- Brain Storming
- Idea Generation
- Anatomy
- Polygonal modeling
- NURBS modeling
- Character Modeling
- Retopology
- UV Unwrapping
- Baking maps
- Texturing
- Lighting
- Materials / Shading
- Rendering
- Compositing
